What we do - Women Peace and Security in Nigeria

What We Do

The Programme on Women, Peace and Security in Nigeria is an initiative of UN Women; implemented in Bauchi and Benue States by International Alert to support the Government of Nigeria’s commitments to localizing the broad goal of gender-inclusive and sustainable peace in Nigeria.

We support Ministries of Women Affairs in States, to develop action plans for engagement with legislative, security, judicial and other governance mechanisms to facilitate strategic policy-making that accounts for gender dynamics in dealing with conflict issues; and establish implementation committees in the states, to enhance implementation, monitoring and reporting of the state action plans (SAPs).

We provide capacity building and institutional strengthening for the effective implementation and operationalization of UNSCR 1325; through need assessments, training workshops and seminars for the Judiciary, Government MDAs, CSOs, Women Groups/Networks, the Media Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and security sector institutions like the Nigerian Army.

We identify, enable and support a network of women mediators who will take tangible action on peace and security issues; we also engage in research on women’s roles in peace and security efforts in the States.

We communicate our original research findings and amplify messaging that promotes women’s participation and leadership in decision-making on peace and security as well as the voices of women peacebuilders through our weekly radio programs on Globe FM Bauchi, and Radio Benue.

We also identify male champions to influence social behaviour change towards women’s participation in peace and security mechanisms, and document our stories through video, case studies and blog stories.
